Consolidate segments
The primary purpose of the String Consolidate functions is to reduce the number of segments in a string by joining together segments whose end points are coincident. This is similar to the Segment Consolidate function except that it applies to a string range in a specified file rather than a graphically selected segment.
The String Consolidate function is frequently used when importing data from other sources that use discrete 2 point line segments to represent polylines (segments that is). The most common use of this function is when importing data from DXF files to minimise the number of segments in the imported strings.
To run this function: Choose File tools > Consolidate segments, or...
Define the Input file to process
Location, Id, String Range
Enter the location and id of the String file you wish to be used as input for STRING CONSOLIDATE.
The string range is range of strings that will be processed. If this field is left blank then all strings will be processed.
Define the Output file to write to
Location, Id
Enter the location and id of the String file you wish to be used as output for STRING CONSOLIDATE.
Note: These are not compulsory fields and if left blank the input file will be overwritten.
Result
The consolidated data is written to the specified file.
If the file already exists then you will be prompted to confirm the save with a verification form to prevent accidental overwriting of the existing file.
Segments are joined together wherever the start or end points of segments are exactly the same. If necessary, segments will be reversed in direction prior to joining them together.
