Annotation functions
The following functions perform drawing of data with labels to annotate the features which are drawn.
Labels Numbers
This function draws the point numbers as they come from the string file.
To run this function: Choose Display > Point > Numbers, or...
Layer name
The name of the layer from which the data are to be drawn may be entered here. The active layer is provided as the default value. You may draw data from all graphics layers by leaving this field blank.
String range
Enter the string range which is to be drawn on the screen. The range must be a standard range specifier.
Segment range
Enter the segment range which is to be drawn on the screen. The range must be a standard range specifier.
Seg pnt range
Enter the segment point range which is to be drawn on the screen. The range must be a standard range specifier.
In the case of each of the ranges entered above, if the range is a blank then this signifies that all ranges of particular strings, segments or segment points are to be drawn. Therefore to draw all numbers simply choose Apply.
A range specifier takes the form of `a, b, c' where each of the values 'a', 'b' and 'c' represent real numbers and it is interpreted as from 'a' to 'b' in steps of 'c'. The value 'c' is optional and if it is not present then a step size of 1 is assumed. The value 'b' is also optional and if it is not present then 'a' defines a single value. Ranges can be made complex by concatenating ranges together using the ';' character. Thus a complex range may take the form, '1,9,2;20,100,10'.
Attribute field
The entry in this field only applies to the DRAW DESCRIPTIONS function.
Enter the name of the attribute field which is to be drawn. Valid entries and a description of the data which are drawn are described below:
| Entry | Description |
| D1 .. D100 or 1 .. 100 | Draw the data from the specified description field. |
| X, Y or Z | Draw the specified co-ordinate field. |
| segment-no | Draw the segment number at each point. |
| string-no | Draw the string number at each point. |
| layer-name | Draw the layer name at each point. |
| segment-point-no | Draw the point numbers in each segment starting at 1 for the first point in each segment. |
| #segment-no | Draw the segment number at the first point in each segment. |
| #string-no | Draw the string number at the first point in each segment. |
| #layer-name | Draw the layer name at the first point in each segment. |
| string-segment-no | Draw the string and segment numbers in the format (string number).(segment number) at each point. |
| #string-segment-no | Draw the string and segment numbers in the format (string number).(segment number) at the first point in each segment. |
Alignment
Different attributes may be drawn at a number of locations about each point. The location of the attribute is determined by entering the manner in which the attribute is to be aligned relative to the point of interest. The text alignment is defined using a number of alignment characters. These alignment characters and their meaning are shown in the table below.
| < | left aligned |
| > | right aligned |
| ^ | top aligned |
| v | bottom aligned |
| * | centre aligned |
| <^ | left and top aligned |
| <v | left and bottom aligned |
| >^ | right and top aligned |
| >v | right and bottom aligned |
Result
The specified data are drawn with marker and labels.
Labels Polygons
This function draws polygons with string numbers as labels. Polygons are plotted as colour and pattern filled regions, and will perform hidden surface removal.
To run this function: Choose Display > Strings > With colour fill, or...
Layer name
The name of the layer from which the data are to be drawn may be entered here. The active layer is provided as the default value. You may draw data from all graphics layers by leaving this field blank.
String range
Enter the string range which is to be drawn on the screen.
Segment range
Enter the segment range which is to be drawn on the screen.
Seg pnt range
Enter the segment point range which is to be drawn on the screen.
In the case of each of the ranges entered above, if the range is a blank then this signifies that all ranges of particular strings, segments or segment points are to be drawn. Therefore to draw all polygons with labels, choose Apply.
Location for legend, Legend title
It is often very useful to have a legend presented on the graphics screen to provide a simple and intuitive means of describing what the colours for each of the polygons that have been drawn mean. A number of drawing functions have the ability to create such a legend for the data which is drawn.
Follow this link for complete details on how legends work for each of the functions which draw string data.
Result
The specified polygons are drawn. Whether faces and or edges are shown is dependent upon the global drawing attributes for these features.
Errors
Points for the Polygon are not coplanar
An important feature of polygons is that the points within a polygon must be coplanar, i.e. all points must be on one flat plane. This message indicates that this is not the case. For example, the Z value of all points in the segment must be the same.
Labels Segments
This function draws strings with labels in the form of SSS.III where ``SSS'' is the string number and ``III'' is the segment number.
To run this function: Choose Display > Strings > With string and segment numbers, or...
