Some example Surpac format coding schemes
Creating points in a string file from a standard surveying pickup with horizontal angle, vertical angle, and slope distance observations
Codes 1,5,4,2 and 3 are required to be present before the first code 10 observation line, to define a standard pickup. The order that the codes 1,5,4,2, and 3 appear is not important in general. The exception to this is where a code 6 backsight station check code is used instead of a code 5. In this case the codes 1, 6 and 4 must appear before the code 2 line.

Backsight station checks in a standard surveying pickup
More information. When you wish to do a backsight station check the 1, 6 and 4 codes must appear before the code 2 line when defining the pickup.
Note: If the "slope distance to backsight" value on the code 6 line is equal to 0.0, then the backsight station check will not be done. In this case the "horizontal reference angle to backsight" will be read from the line and the line will be treated as though it where a standard backsight reference angle code 5 line. Below is an example of the use of a backsight station check:

RESECTION
More important information on resection in Surpac. Resection observations must be taken to stations taken in clockwise order. There are two alternate coding schemes for resection in the Surpac data recorder format. In first coding scheme, resections are structured in a similar way to standard pickups in the Surpac data recorder format. A second resection format has been provided to give added flexibility to data recorder manufacturers who wish to interface with Surpac.
RESECTION CODING SCHEME 1:
Creating new stations by single face resection
For the first resection coding scheme, resections (single and double face) are structured in a similar way to standard pickups in the Surpac data recorder format. Codes 1,5,4,2 and 3 are required to be present before the first code 40 observation line, to define a resection. The order that the codes 1,5,4,2, and 3 appear is not important in general. The exception to this is where a code 6 backsight station check code is used instead of a code 5. In this case the codes 1, 6 and 4 must appear before the code 2 line. In a resection code block, the code 2 instrument station is the unknown resection station to be calculated. The code 1 backsight station is the first known station to which resection observations are made. The code 5 backsight reference angle is the horizontal angle when pointing to the first known resection observation station. Therefore the code 1 station and the code 5 angle will always be the same as the horizontal angle and name of known station on the first code 40 resection observation line. If angles and distances are recorded then observations to at least two stations are required. If only angles are recorded then observations to at least three stations are required. Observations may be taken up to 20 stations.
Here is an example code block for a standard single face observation resection, to calculate the unknown resection station RESECT1:
90,RAS 91,2006-05-26 15:59:41 0,New survey #1 1,STN1 5,309.1831 4,0.000 2,RESECT1 3,0.000 7,1 40,1,39.028,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,16.234,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 |
For the first resection coding scheme, if code 10 observations (with corresponding code 3 and code 7 lines) appear directly after code 40 lines in the job, then Surpac will treat the job as a standard pickup with the (now known) resection station as the instrument station. For example:
90,RAS 91,2006-05-26 15:59:41 0,New survey #1 1,STN1 5,309.1831 4,0.000 2,RESECT1 3,0.000 7,1 40,1,39.028,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,16.234,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 10,3,3.134,196.0024,91.1040 |
Surpac can also do resection calculations solely based on horizontal and vertical angle observations, with no measured slope distances. If the slope distances appear on the code 40 line as exactly 0.0, then Surpac will just use the angles to calculate the resection station. If no distances are measured, then resection observations to at least three stations are required. For example:
90,RAS 91,2006-05-26 15:59:41 0,New survey #1 1,STN1 5,309.1831 4,0.000 2,RESECT1 3,0.000 7,1 40,1,0.0,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,0.0,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 40,3,0.0,5.0136,89.4230,STN3 |
Surpac allows resection adjustments to the backsight reference angle. More informationThis is quite a technical option, and will not be required for resections in general. Below is an example:
90,RAS 91,2006-05-30 16:20:46 0,New survey #1 1,STN1 5,309.1831 4,0.000 2,RESECT1 3,0.000 7,1 40,1,39.028,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,16.234,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 40,3,5.678,5.0136,89.4230,STN3 41,144.1144 10,4,38.967,238.1738,92.5103 10,5,10.677,195.1532,87.5643 |
Creating new stations by double face resection
Surpac also supports double face resection. The coding scheme is similar to single face resection, except the code 40 lines appear as face left, face right observation pairs with the same known station on the line pairs. Below is an example:
90,RAS 91,2006-05-30 16:16:12 0,New survey #1 1,STN1 5,309.1831 4,0.000 2,RESECT2 3,0.000 7,1 40,1,39.028,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,39.028,129.1831,272.1252,STN1 40,3,16.234,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 40,4,16.234,171.3256,271.2345,STN2 |
RESECTION CODING SCHEME 2:
This alternative resection format has been provided to give added flexibility to data recorder manufacturers who wish to interface with Surpac. In this coding scheme codes 42 and 43 respectively mark the start and end of the resection code block. A code 3 target height line must appear before the first code 40 resection observation line, in the resection code block. If the target height changes, additional code 3 lines can appear before each code 40 resection observation line. Below is an example of a new station, RESECT1, created by single face resection observations.
90,RAS 91,2006-05-26 15:59:41 0,New survey #1 42 3,0.000 40,1,39.028,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,16.234,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 43,RESECT1,0.000 |
Note: The second resection coding scheme also supports resection calculations solely
based on horizontal and vertical angle observations,
with no measured slope distances. If the slope distances appear on the code 40 line as exactly 0.0,
then Surpac will just use the angles to calculate the resection station. If no distances are
measured, then resection observations to at least three stations are required.
For the second resection coding scheme, if code 10 observations (with corresponding code 3 and code 7 lines) appear directly after the code 43 line in the job, then Surpac will treat the job as a standard pickup with:
- the (now known) resection station, as the instrument station
- the known station to which the first code 40 observation was made, as the backsight station
- the horizontal angle for the station to which the first code 40 observation was made, as the backsight reference angle
- the instrument height on the code 43 line, as the instrument height for the pickup
For example:
90,RAS 91,2006-05-26 15:59:41 0,New survey #1 42 3,0.000 40,1,39.028,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,16.234,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 43,RESECT1,0.000 3,0.000 7,1 10,3,3.134,196.0024,91.1040 |
The second resection coding scheme also supports double face resections. The coding scheme is similar to single face resection, except the code 40 lines appear as face left, face right observation pairs with the same known station on the line pairs. Below is an example:
90,RAS 91,2006-05-30 16:16:12 0,New survey #1 42 3,0.000 40,1,39.028,309.1831,87.4708,STN1 40,2,39.028,129.1831,272.1252,STN1 40,3,16.234,351.3256,88.3615,STN2 40,4,16.234,171.3256,271.2345,STN2 43,RESECT2,0.000 |
