Converting Unicode string files to ASCII

Surpac works with binary string files or ASCII (text) string files, but not Unicode text string files (such as UTF-16 files). If you want to use a Unicode text string file with Surpac you must convert it to ASCII.

Note: The Unicode character set contains many characters that are not supported in ASCII, for example characters in languages other than English. Any characters not in the ASCII character set might be lost or converted to other characters, depending on your editor and which particular Unicode characters are involved.

  1. Open the Unicode string file in Context.
  2. Context is a text editor supplied for free with Surpac. It is available on the Surpac DVD under Utilities.

  3. Choose Tools > Convert Text To > DOS.
  4. Choose File > Save As and save the file as a text file.
