Triangulate inside a segment

You can use TRIANGULATE INSIDE SEGMENT to close the ends of an open 3DM that has been created by triangulating between segments. The segments at either end of the 3DM can be triangulated inside to create a closed 3DM. Closed 3DMs are significant because a volume report can be generated from them. Also, slices taken through a closed 3DM will always generate closed segments.

You can also use TRIANGULATE INSIDE SEGMENT to triangulate within back or floor strings which represent underground workings.

To run this function: Choose Solids > Triangulate > Inside a segment, or...

  • In the Function Chooser, type TRIANGULATE INSIDE SEGMENT, and press ENTER.

Function

Display only. The name of the function being executed.

Layer name

Display only. The name of the active layer is displayed. The active layer is the only layer you are able to modify.

Object

Enter the object number of the 3DM to be created.

Trisolation

Enter the trisolation number of the 3DM to be created.

Complete the DEFINE THE TRISOLATION TO BE CREATED form and choose Apply to display the prompt:

Select the segment which is to be triangulated

Position the pointer and select a point on the segment which you wish to triangulate inside.

Result

Triangles are automatically created within the selected segment and the screen picture is updated accordingly.

The Triangulate Inside Segment function will work on open segments. The results are the same as if the segment were closed from the last to the first point on the segment.

Limitation

At this point the Triangulate Inside Segment function works fine for segments which are simple to relatively complex in geometry. If you attempt to use a segment which has extremely complex geometry and thousands of points you may get undesirable results.

Warning

The point selected is not in the working layer and cannot be edited

You may only create 3DMs from strings which are in the active layer. You have selected a segment which is not in the active layer.
