Expand string by bench height

You can use this function to expand all segments of a selected string, up or down, by a fixed bench height. Similarly you can use this function to contract the segments of a selected string, up or down, by a fixed bench height. You can use a limiting elevation to ensure that the expanded segments do not exceed a design elevation of interest.

Prerequisites:A string is open in Graphics.

To run this function: Choose Design > Expand string > By bench height, or...

  • In the Function Chooser, type EXPAND STRING BY BENCH HEIGHT, and press ENTER.

Fields on the Expand string by bench height form

Field Description
String

Display only. The string number of the selected string.

Minimum Z value

Display only. The minimum Z value of the selected string.

Maximum Z value

Display only. The maximum Z value of the selected string.

Define the method of expansion
Bench Height

The bench height used for expanding the segments.

Note: You can use the Limiting elevation to stop segment expansion below the desired bench height at a specified elevation.

Limiting elevation The value which will cause the segment expansion to stop below the desired bench height, if the bench height would otherwise cause the new segment to exceed the Limiting elevation.
Z direction

The Z direction determines whether the points on the selected string are projected up to the target elevation, or down to the target elevation.

  • up: The position of any points which are currently above the target elevation will be the same in the new segment.
  • down: The position of any points which are currently below the target elevation will be the same in the new segment.
Horizontal direction
  • expand: The selected string is expanded to create the new string.
  • contract: The selected string is contracted to create the new string.

Output

All segments of the selected string are copied and modified according to the defined variables. Any loops which may form as a result of contracting portions of the segments are removed.
