Label functions
The label functions are useful for assigning unique labels to points in the current layer. The functions available include, LABEL LAYER POINTS, LABEL STRING POINTS and LABEL SEGMENT POINTS. The result of these functions are point labels which are saved to a selected point description fields for later use in the PLOTTING module. The labels are only generated for points which occupy a unique position in space. In other words, if two or more points share the same X, Y and Z coordinates, then the first of these points which is encountered while processing the data will be labelled while the second and successive points are not labelled.
These functions produce identical results with the only difference being the method of selecting the data to be labelled. Because of the similarity of these functions they will be documented only once with the differences regarding data selection described where appropriate.
These functions are particularly useful for Surveyors who are generating setout notes and are only interested in setout notes for unique positions in the string data for which setout notes are to be generated. This is generally the case when the strings to be set out share a number of common points as is often the case when setting out grade control boundaries.
Layer Points
This function will assign labels to each point whose position in space is unique when compared to all other points in the layer.
To run this function: Choose Create > Point labels in > Layer, or...
Description field
Enter the description field number into which the point labels are to be saved.
Prefix
Enter the prefix to the point numbers that are to be created. The prefix may be left blank.
Start number
Enter the number which is to be used for the start of the sequence for the point labels.
Leading zeros
If the numbers are to have leading zeros then enter "Y" otherwise enter "N".
Number width
If you chose to format the number with leading zeros then you must define the field width so that the number of leading zeros may be determined. If you are not using leading zeros then this input is not required.
String Points
This function will assign labels to each point whose position in space is unique in a group of selected strings when compared to all other points in the group of selected strings.
To run this function: Choose Create > Point labels in > String, or...
Select a point on the string to be labelled. <ESC> to finish.
Select a point on the string which is to be included in the list of strings for which labels are to be generated. All segments of the selected string will be included for labelling.
This prompt will continue to be displayed to allow you to select more strings for labelling until you press the ESC key. When you press the ESC key the LABEL STRING POINTS form is displayed.
String
The scrolling region on this form contains a list of the string numbers resulting from the selections using the mouse. This list may be edited to add or remove strings from the list for labelling.
Segment Points
This function will assign labels to each point whose position in space is unique in a group of selected segments when compared to all other points in the group of selected segments.
To run this function: Choose Create > Point labels in > Segment, or...
Select a point on the segment to be labelled. <ESC> to finish.
Select a point on the segment which is to be included in the list of segments for which labels are to be generated.
This prompt will continue to be displayed to allow you to select more segments for labelling until you press the ESC key. When you press the ESC key the LABEL SEGMENT POINTS form is displayed.
String, Segment
The scrolling region on this form contains a list of the string and segment numbers resulting from the selections using the mouse. This list may be edited to add or remove strings from the list for labelling.
Only those points in either the entire layer, the list of strings to be labelled or the list of segments to be labelled, which occupy a unique position in space will be labelled. The labels are formatted as described on the various data entry forms and the labels are stored in the specified description field.
The labels are saved in the specified description field and the labels are then drawn on beside each of the points.
