Polygons by intersection

This function allows you to create new closed segments by performing polygon intersection between two selected closed segments.

To run this function: Choose Create > Polygons by > Intersection, or...

  • In the Function Chooser, type INTERSECT STRINGS, and press ENTER.

DESCRIPTION FIELDS FOR RESULT STRING form.

This form allows you to define where to get the point description fields for the result strings. You may choose to get the description fields from either (a) from the intersected string only (the description fields from the first point on the intersected string are used); or (b) both the intersected and intersecting strings (depending on which string the result point originally lay on). In general you would choose to get the description fields from the intersected string only (as this will usually be where the more important data lies). However if you were, for example, intersecting a data string with a lease boundary, you might choose to use the description fields from both strings.

Press the From Intersected String button to get the description fields from the intersected string only (the description fields from the first point on the intersected string are used); or press the From Both Strings button to get the description fields from both the intersected and intersecting strings (depending on which string the result point originally lay on).

Press the relevant button on the DESCRIPTION FIELDS FOR RESULT STRING form to display the prompt:

Select the intersecting shape

Position the pointer and select a point which is on the intersecting segment.

At the prompt:

Select the shape to be intersected

Position the pointer and select a point which is on the intersected segment.

The IntersectStrings function will continue until the Cancel button is pressed.

The two closed segments are intersected to produce new closed segments. The new segments enclose the areas which are common to both the original segments.

Add The new segments will use the design string number as their string number.
Change The two selected segments are deleted and replaced by the new segments. The original segments will only be deleted if they belong to the active layer.
Insert The new segments will have the string number of the intersecting shape as their string number.
