Expand/contract

You use this function to expand a closed segment by either a specified offset distance or a specified percentage of the segments.

To run this function: Choose Edit > Segment > Expand/Contract, or Underground Design > Edit > Segment > Expand/Contract, or...

  • In the Function Chooser, type EXPAND SEGMENT, and press ENTER.

The point mode that is active when you run this function changes the behaviour of the function. The table below describes the result of being in Add, Change, or Insert mode when using EXPAND SEGMENT.

Mode Behaviour
Add The new segment is added into the design string in the active layer. If the first point selected is not in the active layer, the result will always be as if MODE Add is in effect.
Change The selected segment is changed to the new position.
Insert The new selected segment is given the string number of the selected segment and the original segment remains unchanged.

Prerequisites: A segment is open in Graphics.

Note: If you are expanding or contracting by distance, this function works on both open and closed segments. If you are expanding or contracting by percentage, this function works only on closed segments.

Fields on the Expand or contract a segment form

  • Percentage: The offset amount is treated as a percentage of the area of the segment.
Offset amount

The offset amount to control the size of the new segment. The units of the offset amount is determined by the value of the By field.

If you enter a negative offset value, the segment is contracted. If you enter a positive offset value, the segment is expanded.

Output

The new or modified segments are displayed in Graphics.
