Cutting plane

This function allows you to describe a line on the screen so that all parts of the image currently displayed on the screen that are to one side of the described line are removed.

To run this function: Choose View > Viewing planes > Cutting plane, or...

  • In the Function Chooser, type CUTTING PLANE, and press ENTER.

Note: This function does not alter the data but only alters the view of the data.

Click and drag to define the cutting plane

Position the cursor and then press the mouse button. Without releasing the mouse button move the cursor to a new location. A line is drawn as you move the cursor to provide dynamic feedback. When the line is in the desired position release the mouse button.

You will be prompted to continue defining cutting planes until you cancel the function by either pressing the Escape key or by invoking another function.

All parts of the screen image which are to the right of the line are removed. Note that it is only the screen image which is modified. The original data remains unaltered. The cutting plane is assumed to extend to infinity from each end of the line, therefore only a very short line need be drawn to describe a cutting plane.

The right side of the line is determined by looking from the start of the line (the point where the mouse button is pressed) towards the end of the line (the point where the mouse button is released).

The cutting planes remain in force until the delete cutting planes function is invoked or until you exit from the GRAPHICS module. Using the clear screen function has no effect on the cutting planes. 2D and 3D grids are not affected by cutting planes.
