After you have clicked New to create a new menu item, the Create Menu Item form is displayed. After you have clicked New to create a new toolbar item, the Create Toolbar Item form is displayed. Many of the controls in these forms are the same, so both forms are described in the following table. Some fields are displayed only in specific circumstances, which are stated in the table.

Fields on the Create Menu Item form or the Create Toolbar Item form

Field Description
Menu type
  • Item - This type of item allows you to add a function or script to a menu or toolbar. When you select this option, it makes the items on the Type drop-down available.
  • Label - A text label that does not run any command, function, or script. Menu items only.
  • Separator - A line separating menu items or toolbar items. This helps you group related items together.
  • Radio - An option button, sometimes called a 'radio button'. Menu items only.
  • Submenu- A submenu. You can then specify its name. Menus only.
  • Toggle - This is the same type as Item, except that when a user selects the item, it switches on or off. Toolbar items only.
Default and Selected

When you create a toolbar item, of menu type: Toggle, you can select both of these options.

  • Default - Sets the function or script to run when the toolbar item is in the default or non-selected state, for example when it first appears.
  • Selected - Sets the function or script to run when the toolbar item is in the 'selected' state, for example when you click it for the first time.
Label The text label for an item of menu type Label.
Type
  • Client - The client type performs various tasks on the user interface. This type is not documented in detail because it is not intended to be a feature for the user to implement. Customise Menus/Toolbars, Exit, and Close are examples of client commands. They are commands that you cannot record in a macro, and which operate only on the user interface. Changing the language from English to French is another example of a client command.

The type Client is included because some functions have client commands embedded in their execution.

  • Client script - Use the ellipsis button at the end of the Command field to select the client script to run when you select this menu item. Client script functions are Surpac functions that have been implemented using the client/server architecture.

  • Function - Use the Command field to select a Surpac function to run when you select this menu item.

For example, if you wanted an icon to represent the function SECTION DTM, you would select that function name from the list of functions.

  • CMD/Tcl script - Use the Command field to specify the location of your macro.

For example, if you had a Tcl script in the c:\scripts directory, you could use the file browser to select the file from that directory.

CMD/TCL scripts that are executed from toolbar buttons or menu items in this way are executed in fast motion playback by default. This means that the forms are not displayed unless they have been modified to accept the entry of values.

If you want to see all forms displayed when the script runs, you should add |-s after the name of the CMD or TCL file. This instructs the system to execute the script in slow motion, causing the forms to be displayed for a brief period before continuing.

Command The script to run when you click the menu item or toolbar item.
Image

Several Surpac icons are available for the toolbar item. Alternatively, you can import your own. The images you can select are stored in the SSI_RESOURCE:\icons directory. You can also import images from other directories. If you import an image from an external directory, when the toolbar is saved, a copy of the image is created in the SSI_PROFILES:\<profileName>\resource\icons\custom directory.

Note: To help you create your own images, editors are available for download from the Internet. For example, the image editor MicroAngelo is available at www.impactsoft.com.

Selected When the menu type is Radio, you can set the item to be Selected by default.
Name When the menu type is Submenu, you type the name of the submenu here.
Tool Tip You can type a ToolTip for a toolbar item. The ToolTip appears when you move the pointer over the toolbar item.

Output

The menu bars and toolbars are modified in the way that you specified. The profile that you selected is current.

Notes:

  • Showing or hiding menus and toolbars
  • You can hide or show any of the menu bars or toolbars. To do so, right-click a menu bar or toolbar, and use the submenus to select the menus or toolbars you want to see.

  • Floating toolbars
  • You can make a toolbar 'float' by clicking anywhere on the toolbar you want to float, and dragging it out of its current docked place. When you save your profile, Surpac will remember the position of this toolbar when you restart Surpac. You can dock a floating toolbar by dragging the toolbar into the docking area under the menu bars. You can close a toolbar by clicking the cross in its top right corner.

If you have a custom menu bar or toolbar hidden, or a floating toolbar, and you use Customise Menus/Toolbars, after the settings are applied, these floating toolbars and hidden menu bars and toolbars are docked and visible respectively. This only occurs for the custom menus and toolbars. You can right-click to hide them again, or drag to make them float, and then save your profile.

  • Importing custom menus and toolbars
  • When you install a new version of Surpac, and you still have an older version of Surpac installed on the computer, you are prompted to retrieve settings from the older installation. If you retrieve the older setings, the custom menus or toolbars from the older installation are imported into the new version of Surpac.
