Message options
This function allows you to reset the default message options. The default message options are stored in the file defaults.ssi. Message Options does not edit the defaults.ssi file so changes made will be lost when you exit the software. If you want to make permanent changes to the message options, you should refer to System Defaults.
To run this function: Choose File > Utilities > Message options, or Customise > Message options, or...
Language file
This determines the language to display messages in. Supported languages are:
- English - Selected by using the keyword default
- German
- French
- Spanish
- Russian
- Chinese
The default language for any new installation is chosen depending on the current locale and to change the language you must either use this function or change the language option on the System Defaults form.
The software will only operate correctly in Chinese when the current windows locale is set to Chinese. In general Chinese requires that the Asian fonts and a Chinese input method are installed and that the default locale is set to Chinese. The steps to do this vary with which version of the Windows Operating System is installed (http://www.andante.org/ime.html provides some useful information).
To have the system operate correctly when the Russian language has been chosen you must ensure the following steps have been successfully completed.
- Enable the Russian input local and install the Russian fonts so that Russian characters can be entered and displayed correctly.
To complete this task use the following steps:
- From the Start menu choose Settings and then select the Control Panel
- Select the icon for Regional Settings.
- Select the Input Locales tab
- Choose Add Locale to add the Russian input locale.
The characters stored in various Surpac files (e.g. string files, .pf files, .not files) are encoded using a language specific encoding of the characters. The standard 128 character ASCII character set is the same for all the supported languages but bytes with the hexadecimal values 0x80 to 0xFF (129 to 255 decimal) are interpreted differently depending on the language in use. If a file is written with the software set to a particular language then any characters outside the range 0x00 to 0x7f will be interpreted differently when loaded into the software running with a language with a different encoding. The character encodings used for the languages are:
- English, German, French and Spanish - ISO Latin 1 (also known as ISO-8859-1)
- Russian - Windows Code Page 1251.
- Chinese - GBK.
Limitations in the support for foreign languages at this time include:
- Chinese characters can be displayed in the PLOT PREVIEW function, and the WINDOWS driver is the only hardcopy driver that currently handles the output of Chinese text.
- Russian characters can only be output to a plotter device by using the WINDOWS plotter driver.
- All other foreign languages can only be output to a plotter device by using either the WINDOWS plotter driver or a HPGL or HPGL2 plotter driver.
Support for foreign languages by the plotter drivers is described in the table below.
| Language | HPGL & HPGL2 | Windows |
|---|---|---|
| English (default language) |
Supported | Supported |
| German | Supported | Supported |
| French | Supported | Supported |
| Spanish | Supported | Supported |

If you enter an invalid response, i.e. anything other than on or off.
Log file name
This names the file where the system messages are written and stored if Logging to file is set to on. The file can have any path and file name which is valid for your operating system. A suggestion could be use the date as a file name and your initial as an extension. The default log file name is `ssi.log'. This file will be present in your current working directory.
Note:Each time you change directories in the middle of a work session and have not specified a path for the log file name, you will open a new log file.
Debug messages
Debug is used to control the detail of the messages that are reported by the software. Valid responses are either on or off. When it is set to on, the level of messages is very detailed. The Hotline may ask you to set Debug Messages on and Logging to File on. The results can provide useful information to improve the support. Otherwise the recommended setting is off.
