Change / Inspect Licence

The GEOVIA licensing system permits only authorised computers to run the GEOVIA software. The authorisation mechanism requires a unique identifier (hostid) for the computer on which the software will run, and a licence file which provides the authorisation for the software to run on that computer.

To run this function: Choose File > Licencing > Change /Inspect Licence, or...

  • In the Function Chooser, type UPDATE LICENCE, and press ENTER.

Surpac obtains the hostid from a hardware device, called a dongle, which you connect to a USB port. An alternative name for a dongle is a sentinel.

The licence file provides authorisation to run the software with control over:

  • the expiry date of the licence
  • the modules that are licensed for use
  • the number of concurrent users
  • the computer on which the software will run

Note: If you start Surpac, and no valid licence exists for the hostid of the computer on which the software is running, the UPDATE LICENCE function runs automatically to begin the software licensing procedure.

Fields on the Select licence form

Field Description
Licence type
  • Unlicenced. You can view data in Surpac. No modules are licensed. You do not need a dongle or a network connection.
  • Local. The modules you have purchased are available when you plug in the dongle into your computer. This is a local licence. You can take the dongle to another computer and run Surpac on that computer if you want. You do not need a network connection or Internet connection.
  • Network. The modules you have purchased are available when you can contact a GEOVIA Licence Manager server that is serving licences on your local area network. You need a network connection.

Network licence settings
Server address The computer name, or IPv4 address, of the computer that is running the GEOVIA Licence Manager. In some situations where your computer cannot resolve the computer name to an IP address, you fail to get a connection using the computer name, but you succeed in getting a connection using the IPv4 address.
Port The UDP port number on which the Licence Manager is running. The default port is 1234.
Connect To get a licence from Licence Manager you must click Connect. When the connection is successful, the Available classes list shows the licence classes that are available.
Available classes

Lists the licence classes that are available on the licence server to which you have connected. It also shows how many of each type of class are available. When you select a class, the Select licence form also shows you the expiry date of the licence, and the product and version you can use the licence for.

Note: After the expiry date of a licence, you cannot run Surpac with that licence.

Licenced modules This section shows a green check mark beside each module that you are licenced to use.

Output

If the licence is valid, the Message window displays a message to show that you are using the licence, and you can now use the features of Surpac that you are licensed to use. If the licence is invalid, the Update Licence Token form remains open.

Tip: To see a list of functions that you can run for each module, type FUNCTION LIST in the function chooser, and press ENTER. Then open the file surpac2.txt (or quarry.txt if you are running Quarry, or xplorpac.txt if you are running Xplorpac) which is created in the working directory.
